Portfolio
Ericsson Hatfield’s compositional work centers on chamber and vocal music, combining technical rigor with expressive and idiomatic writing informed by ongoing research into formal and contrapuntal theory. Strongly shaped by his background as a performer, these works place particular emphasis on instrumental and vocal idiomaticism. Alongside contemporary compositions, this portfolio also includes historical studies, stylistic reconstructions, and pedagogical models exploring the interaction between historical procedures and alternative systems of pitch organization. Many of these works emerge from ongoing research into compositional process, canon, and contrapuntal structure.
His work has received recognition for both chamber and vocal composition, including the National Association of Teachers of Singing (NATS) Art Song Composition Award, the Kristen Pankonin Award for Composition at the San Francisco Conservatory of Music, and awards from the Tribeca New Music Festival. His work has also been programmed by American Bach Soloists and The Capital Hearings. He is also published by E. C. Schirmer.
Selected compositions, historical studies, performances, and instructional materials may be viewed through his YouTube channel, which serves as an ongoing archive of compositional, pedagogical, and performance work.
