Studio
This studio centers on the study of compositional craft through concrete technique and compositional demonstration. The curriculum is rigorously structured, with emphasis placed on contrapuntal and formal technique, analytical fluency, keyboard improvisation, and aural skills. Compositional technique is organized into the study of procedure and form. Procedures include canon, invertible counterpoint, sequence, and fugue, while forms include structures such as sonata, rondo, and aria. Chamber and vocal music serve as the primary mediums through which these techniques are studied and realized.
All theoretical concepts are approached through direct compositional application. Students undertake extensive work in imitation and modeling drawn from masterworks. Particular emphasis is placed on clarity of process and the development of technical understanding. Students also receive access to original teaching materials and instructional videos developed through my ongoing research and pedagogical work.
As both a performer and composer, I place strong emphasis on the realization of new work through live performance and recording. Drawing upon my professional network of performers, advanced students may be given opportunities for readings, premieres, and recordings as their work develops.
Instruction is offered privately through weekly lessons, both in-person and online. Serious inquiries are welcome.
